About SCPC-Henkel Supply Chain Innovation Program
Description
The SCPC forum aims to bring together academicians and supply chain practitioners across industries to network, share best practices, and influence policy decisions, with the end objective of propelling India towards Global Supply Chain Leadership and Excellence
Theme: Sustainability in Supply Chain
Supply chain Management traditionally focuses on challenges of cost reduction, on time delivery to allow better reaction to business challenges. However, the increasing environmental costs of these networks in a globalized situation and growing consumer pressure for eco-friendly products has led many organizations to look at supply chain sustainability as a new measure of profitable supply chains.
Prof. Seema provided valuable insights on supply chain sustainability and used case studies to emphasize its importance. Environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability were explored. Pollution, deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss were identified as impacts on the environment. Economic sustainability has implications for cost, quality, speed of delivery, flexibility, and resource utilization, visibility while child labor, worker’s right, working conditions and safety are concerns for social sustainability.
The following steps were defined for companies who have embarked on the sustainability journey:
- Map your supply chain.
- Communicate expectations.
- Baseline supplier performance.
- Develop training and capacity building programs.
- Drive performance improvement.
- Join industry collaboration.
Mr. Sridhar’s session emphasized the importance of sustainability in manufacturing and explained how sustainability plays a role in the entire value chain right from raw materials to the end-of-life of a product. He described the challenges faced by industries like
- Depletion of Resources
- Commodity price inflation
- Energy cost increases
- Environmental legislations – Water, Air, Waste Water
- Multi-layer Plastic Management
- Waste Management – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Mr. Odhekar shared his views on the circular economy and sustainability in the supply chain using the case study of Marico. UPCYCLE is the flagship program of Marico to promote sustainable packaging. The program is inspired by the philosophy of circular economy to take every step to transform plastic discarded as waste into a new high value material or product of better quality and environmental value. To address plastic waste 750000 kg multi-layer packaging (MLP) waste has been collected and disposed. Plastic waste is also converted into fuel by Thermo Catalytic Decomposition (TCD) technology.
